Okay, this is an adaptation of another story over on fictionpress I'm writing, called Future Tense (search for it under 'Sci-Fi'). Not much background needed for it, other than it being the 22nd century.

It is the ultimate technology, a force that can give billions the gift of immortality and the cure for trillions of dieseases. Nothing can stop it: Once it is discovered, even a child has the necessary components to create it. It is perfection...
And desolation, for it can annihilate entire worlds, galaxies, or even universes with incredible accuracy. Anything created by a sentient being will have the capacity for good and evil. Once it is discovered the collapse of the civilisation that found it is unavoidable.
It is said that, long ago, a race found it and tried in vain to lock the knowledge away from the rest of the galaxy, to stop its coming. They failed.
Nothing can stop it now.
Of all the buildings on Mars, the spaceport was unique, Ardias reflected. Nothing else could conceivably be this crowded.
